Blue Chamomile and Baby Soap
While working on our baby soap bars sometime ago, I discovered the beauty of a fantastic all natural product: blue chamomile. In this short post I will try to explain you how this product is extracted from plants and why it is a perfect match with all-natural baby soaps.
Why it is so special? It is because of several reasons but I would say we can wrap them up in the following list:
- Exceptional therapeutic properties
- Beautiful and unexpected color
- Very precious
- Very expensive
The blue variant of chamomile is referred to the botanical “German” Matricaria Recrutita plant (Wikipedia) which is mostly cultivated in Hungary, Egypt, Eastern Europe and France (we are specifically using oils extracted from Egyptian flowers). The beautiful dark blue color of this essential oil comes from an organic compound called Azulene. In the German chamomile the concentration of this compound is particularly high and it determines the superior therapeutic properties of this plant and oil extract with respect to other members of the same family.
In terms of therapeutic properties, this oil has a magical sweet smell favoring relaxation and meditation. On the skin it soothes and calms irritations (anti-inflammatory properties) but it also favors regeneration of tissues (regenerative and cicatrizant properties). The high concentration of Azulene and Matricin makes this oil perfect for very sensitive skins like those of babies. Therefore we decided to use this oil in our baby soap line.
Why a soap bar can be a truly luxury product
As often happens, scarcity goes along with high price. In this case it is the oil extraction process which has a very low yield to determine an impressive ~5-10 $/ml price. A yield of 0.2-0.4% means in fact that in order to obtain 1 ml of essential oil (~0.930 g) one needs between 250 and 450 g of camomile flowers. Can you imagine how many chamomile infusion portions one can prepare with such quantities?! With ~1 g per tea bag this makes 250-450 infusions! In comparison I am sure that you won’t find the expensive bottle of wine that you tasted last week that expensive anymore…
Quality and a touch of luxury comes at a price but for those of you that are looking for something special, we decided to propose something that can really meet your demanding needs and we hope you can enjoy this quality when you wash your delicate skin and enjoy the relaxing flavor of this magical blue extract.
